Karen A. Emerson(1946-2021)
Karen A. Emerson(1946-2021)

Emerson, Karen A.

It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Karen Ann Emerson, age 75, on Wednesday, August 11th, 2021.  She was preceded in death by her loving husband Donald J. Emerson and her parents Reuben and Sylvia Springborn.

Born January 6th, 1946 in Shawano, WI, Karen was the youngest sister of Mae (Bill) Siefert, Nancy Baumann, and Dr. James (Sue) Springborn.

Karen excelled when it came to education, she graduated from Bayview High School where she was in the top of her class.  She participated in marching band, foreign language club, and was a member of the Honor Society.

Karen was a graduate of Milwaukee County General Hospital School of Nursing and received her bachelor's degree at the College of St. Francis.  She started her nursing career at Milwaukee County General Hospital for five years and then worked as an ICU nurse at St. Francis Hospital until she retired in 2013.

While working at St. Francis Hospital in the early 70's, Karen, her coworker Maureen Szymanski, and several others felt that the environment was unsafe for nurses and patients.  Despite management disapproval, they worked together to better the overall working conditions.  They organized a drive to form a union, an effort that took many years to come to fruition through the court systems.  In 1984, the hospital finally began to bargain with nurses.  Karen worked tirelessly on the bargaining team without pay.  It took more than a year to get their first contract, which was effective in 1985.  She remained on the team every year until 1996 when she handed it off to new leaders.  Karen remained a champion for patients and the best working environment for nurses.

Karen was a mentor and friend to so many in the hospital.  Her knowledge, patience, and humor made her a leader on the night shift.  She was calm under pressure and skilled in helping everyone to be successful.  She was known for her extravagrant costume paties, coordinated potlucks, and holiday decorations.

Karen never failed to capture moments of enjoyment with a camera.  She created several albums of memories throughout her life.  She loved crafting and crocheting, making many wonderful gifts for friends and family.  She enjoyed a good game of Sheepshead and poker.  In earlier years, she treasured spending time at her cottage with family and fishing with her beloved husband, Don.

Karen was the life of the party.  She had an infectious laugh and captivated people with her great storytelling.  She enjoyed celebrations, any excuse to wear a costume or a sparkly pin.  Karen was an entertainer at heart whether it was synchonized swimming, dancing, or skits she never ceased to perform.  Her generosity and selflessness was beyond compare.

Karen is survived by her four darling children Debra (Andrew) Klapperich, Mark (Terrie) Emerson, Sara (Dan Muehlbach) Voigt, and Theresa (Michael) Fix.  Grandma Karen (Goomie Goodtimes) cherished her eleven grandchildren Jacob, Eli, Samantha, Jeremiah, Jordan, Noah, Lauren, Lindsey, Oran, Oliver, Eliot and her great-granddaughter Grace.  She adored her shih tzus Blanche and Maggie.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 - 2:45 PM, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 3:00 PM, on Friday, August 27th, 2021 at St. Mary's Catholic Faith Community, 9520 W. Forest Home Ave., Hales Corners, WI 53130.  A live-stream will be available right before Mass begins at St.Mary's Catholic Faith Community, then click on the Facebook icon on the homepage.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that you donate to St. Jude Children's Hospital and the Wisconsin Humane Society.
