Dr. John Just
Dr. John Just

John F. Just entered eternal life on March 28, 2024 at the age of 88.  He was a cherished father, husband, grandfather, friend, and physician.  John's journey was one of unwavering compassion and generosity.

In 1963, John found his soulmate Elizabeth (Doherty).  Together, they raised five children:  Joseph (Melinda), James, Jennifer (Mathew), Judson (Donna), and Jonathan (Laura).  The joy and happiness that their fourteen grandchildren brought into John's life was immeasuable.  John was proud of his upbringing in Donora, PA (Go Dragons!).  John pursued higher education at Brown University and the University of Illinois College of Medicine.  For over 48 years he practiced as a thoracic surgeon and dedicated himself to serving the Milwaukee community, providing compassionate care to countless patients.

As an Emeritus Clinical Professor of Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin, he imparted his wisdom and work ethic to more than 140 residents.  His dedication to teaching was exemplified by receiving Clinical Faculty Department of Surgery Teaching Awards.  John's passion extended beyond his profession.  He was an avid reader, had an insatiable love for classical music (Vivaldi anyone?), and enjoyed traveling to over fifty countries.  Sharing his life experiences, life lessons and stories with his family and colleagues was a source of joy for him.  How he lived his life was the greatest gift we could have received.  John"s absence will be deeply felt, and his compassion, quick wit, impeccable style, boundless generosity, and unwavering faith will continue to inspire and uplift his beloved family and friends.  His memory will forever be etched in our hearts, reminding us to embrace life, strive for excellence, and cherish the precious moments we shared with him.

His most famous catchphrase, "every day is a work day," is a daily reminder of his enduring presence.

In his memory donations to the American Lung Association are appreciated.

2016 Ruth & Tom 50th Reunion nursing school anniversary MSOE
2016 Ruth & Tom 50th Reunion nursing school anniversary MSOE

I'm sad to announce the recent passing of our classmate Ruth Balla Norman.  I was contacted by Ruth's cousin Mark and informed that Ruth passed on January 8, 2024.  Several years ago, Ruth was diagnosed with lung cancer and until recently was doing fairly well when reocurrance was discovered.  According to her wishes, there was no obituary or service.

After graduation, Ruth worked very briefly at County and then worked the rest of her career at Colunbia-St. Mary's in OB.  Until retirement, she and her husband, Tom, lived in Whitefish Bay.  A number of years ago, they moved to Bozeman, Montana.  Tom died in 2020.  They had one daughter.

RIP Ruth

LYNNE LUTZKE HOFF  (1943-2023)

Born to Eternal Life on December 28, 2023, at the age of 80.  Beloved mother of Dawn (Eric) Engle, Michelle (Jeff) Bintzler, and Chrissy (Ted) Nierzwicki.  Loving grandmother to Amanda Wolf, Talon Morris, Kiraney Morris, Colt Morris, Quinn Nierzwicki, Molly Nierzwicki & Lexi Hoff.  Precious Nana to Haley, Kendal, Sadler and Delaney.  Also survived by other relatives and special friends.

Lynne was a proud graduate of the County Hospital nursing program,  forming lifelong friendships and a career spanning 40 years of delivering babies and caring for new moms, most notably at the former St, Michael's Hospital in Milwaukee WI.  Not only was Lynne an integral part of hundreds of births, she was most blessed to be part of the births of many of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Lynne continued on to evidence her care for others post-retirement, as an active member of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, reaching out to serve her community through bake sales, craft fairs, First Fridays, Vacation Bible School, and other fellowship events.

The family offers special thanks to Dr. Ranveer Nand and his nurse navigator Demetra, as well as nurse Maria with Horizon Home Hospice for their compasionate care of Lynne.  Unmeasurable gratitude to Gail Siewert, who amongst her other dear friends, provided unwavering love and support to Lynne both before and during her illness.  Lynne was a regular participant in weekly worship and bible studies, led by Pastor Gregory Mech, who provided great comfort and spriritual advisement to her.

Recently, Ramona Rupnow Achtor lost her husband of 53 years.

Jerry Achtor died peacefully on November 24, 2023 at the age of 82.  Jerry was prededed in death by his parents Harold & Edna Achtor & his sister Judy Achtor.  Beloved husband of Ramona 'Mona' (nee Rupnow) of 53 years, devoted father of Steve (Hannah) Achtor & Daniel (Laura) Achtor.  Loving brother of Thomas (BetteJane) Achtor.  Dear grandpa to Silas, Heidi, Ian & Aaron.  He will also be missed by many other relatives & friends.

Jerry studied accounting at UW-Madison, was a member of the Army Reserve, & started Flambeau Stamp & Coin Company.  He was President & owner of RoBand Corporation for 35 years where he took great pride in providing employment to over 80 people at its height.  Throughout his life he was an avid outdoorsman - he loved grouse hunting, deer hunting, sailing, skiing, and snowmobiling.  Jerry was especially passionate about Muskie fishing & fond memories were made during many family trips to Lake of the woods with his family.  He loved spending time with all his family members at the family cottage in Northern Wisconsin & at their home in Florida.  If you knew Jerry, you knew that he was always quick with a story, a smile, or a lesson, but not always quick with a punchline.

MELODI MATHER DUWELL
:  So sorry I can't take part in the luncheon.  We had mid-June high school & family reunions in WI, so we were unable to travel again.  My husband continues his challenges with Parkinson's & low vision & I am the 'everyday' & 'flight ' nurse!  He remains NPO & doing well with his GI tube for feedings.
Fortunately, my health is good, so this has worked out so far.  Like everyone else in the world our age, trying to downsize 'stuff'.  Please say hello to all who gather, wherever.
Hugs, Melodi

Pat Mathias Pearson:  Would love to meet for lunch but not up for the 3+ hour drive from Door County.  I'm still working a few days a week at Peninsula Park golf course.  The course is 100 years old this year so some celebrating going on.
Wishing all who may attend the lunch a happy time and good health in the coming years.  Pat Mathias Pearson

Kathy Koller Brasch:  Hi, FYI.  I have ALS, the bulbar variety.  Can't talk anymore.  Can't eat.  Have a feeding tube.  Have trouble swallowing.  I have everything below my neck.  So, I still get to do my "chores".  We are in Denton Texas.  30 minutes from one of the boys.  The other 2 are in Iowa and Oswego.  It's the pits for sure but it could be worse.  Hope all is well.  Blessings, Kathy Koller Brasch

I picked out the most "newsy" emails.  All responders sending greetings from their respective homes.

 JEAN BOHANON CHRISTENSEN (1944-2021)

6/29/2021
Melodi Mather Duwell shared the news of the passing of Jean Bohanon Christensen, class of 1965.  Melodi & Jean were friends for 58 years & as you can see Jean had a very distinquished nursing career.

Jean was born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin on September 18, 1944 and passed away with her family at her side on April 21, 2021.

She graduated from the Milwaukee County General Hospital School of Nursing on August 20, 1965.  While working on her nursing degree and attending a YMCA dance, she was swept offf her feet by Peter, her future husband of 55 years.  They married on August 28, 1965 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and moved to their new home on St. Croix. USVI.  Jean began her nursing career as an emergency room and operating room nurse at the local hospital on St. Croix.  She went on to work at the St. Croix Health Department, the Catholic Social Center, and as a school nurse for an elementary school.  While on St. Croix, she became a mom with the birth of her daughter, Carmen in 1967.

In 1973, Jean and her family moved to Ft. Collins, Colorado while Peter earned his Ph.D.  Jean worked as a nurse at a local retirement home and after Peter completed his education, Jean and her family moved to Puyallup, Washingtonwhere Jean once again worked as a nurse at a local retirement home.  In 1976, Jean and her family, moved to Orlando where they reunited with fellow Cruzan friends, the Lacombs and later the Larges and their families.

While in Orlando, jean worked as a nurse at the Orange County health Department where she had the opportunity to do home-visits for her patients.  In her continuous pursuit of expanding her medical knowledge, Jean earned her Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner degree from Emory University in 1983.  She then went on to earn her B.S. in Nursing, cum laude, in 1994 from the University of Central Florida while also taking courses at the University of Florida.  Jean transitioned from nursing at the health department to working in private practice, providing ob/gyn nurse practitioner care for her numerous patients.  While she retired from private practice several years ago, her passion for nursing continued along with her strong desire to provide compassionate care to those in need and she began volunteering as a nurse practitioner at Grace Medical Home.  She was volunteering at Grace Medical up until her hospitalization.

In her nursing yearbook, Jean highlighted the following, which exemplifies her devotion:

Nursing is one of the vital professions cooperating with the other health disciplines.  It is both an art and a science which directs its efforts towards the patient as a person, meeting his total needs and assisting him and his family to participate in his care and restore him to useful activity in the family unit and his community.

Jean is survived by her husband Peter Christensen, daughter Carmen Ward, son-in-law Rob Ward, grandchildren, Doug Ward, Jack Ward, and Maria Ward, twin brother Jim Bohanon, uncle Harlan Ross, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mike and Norma Christensen, and brothers-in-law, Olie Christensen and Frank Christensen.

The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Jean's honor to Grace Medical Home via the link provided.  Grace Medical Home provides coordinated, comprehensive primary medical care.  Their approach to care is to take the patient's entire well-being into consideration. Their mission is to be a medical home reflecting the heart of Christ by offering the highest level of health care to those in our community who need it most.

A Celebration of Life gathering was held at Newcomer Funeral Home, 895 S. Goldenrod Road, Orlando on May 8, 2021.  Friends and family were invited to share their memories of Jean and wear their favorite Caribbean/Cruzan attire.  jean will be interred on St. Croix at a later date.

Contributions may be made in memory of Jean via the following link-www.gracemedicalhome.org

On Friday, July 14, 2017, Jane Wedel Taufner, Nancy Hatzinger Perez, Penny Gease Papenfus & Carole Albrecht Hoover represented our class at MSOE Alumni Summer in the City Nurse's Luncheon.  Nurses from all MCGHSON classes are invited to spend some time together having lunch, hearing about MSOE's nursing program & touring their nursing school facilities.  By the way, the facilities are state of the art & we should be proud to see the influence MCGHSON has had on MSOE & the development of their nursing program.  This year, we heard about the accelerated nursing program for those with degrees in other fields wishing to go into the nursing field.  We also had an opportunity to see the area that is being developed with MCGHSON historical collection.  I've added a flyer below regarding donations that may be accepted.  The flyer has the name of the contact person if you wish further information.
When this event rolls around next year, put it on your calendar.  The luncheon is great & there are other MSOE activities available for your enjoyment on a summer weekend as well as Bastille Days.

James M. Cerletty, MD
James M. Cerletty, MD
13 December 2016

Many of you will remember Dr. Cerletty from our school days as the doc who  probably saw you in the Student Health Center.

Cerletty, M.D., James Mathias, age 83, passed away on December 9, 2016 at his home in Brookfield, WI. Jim was born in Milwaukee on October 18, 1933, the youngest of the seven children of Ermalinda (Strack) and Frank Cerletty. Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Susan (nee Hulce), his children, Marie Cerletty (Thomas Gigot), James Cerletty (Lisa), Carl Cerletty (Monica), Mathew Cerletty (Erin Rommel) and his grandchildren, Carolyn Gigot, Nicholas Gigot, Nathan Cerletty and Sophia Cerletty. He is also survived by his brother Francis Cerletty (Louise) and other family members, colleagues and friends. Jim graduated as Valedictorian from Marquette University High School in 1951. He received his Bachelor of Science degree at Marquette University and graduated from Marquette Medical School in 1958. He completed his Medical Internship at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington D.C. and served in the NATO Army Medical Corps in Poitiers, France. He returned to Wisconsin for his Residency in Internal Medicine and Fellowship in Endocrinology at Milwaukee County General Hospital. He later became Director of Residency Training, a position he held for over 40 years; Professor of Medicine and Vice Chairman of the Department of Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Jim cared deeply about his patients and his role in shaping the practices of more than 1,000 physicians. Jim was known for his keen mind and dry wit. He was a voracious reader of all subjects, generously sharing his favorite books. He was a writer, historian and at times, stand-up comedian.  Nursing  Story  -  Jane Taufner

One of my earliest jobs as a nurse was working in the Adult Intensive Care Unit (such as it was in 1968, at one end of the recovery room)  at Milwaukee County General Hospital .  It was a Saturday night, October 19th, 1968 and I was working the night shift with my nurse friend, Madelyn ( we were young and single and would much rather have been out on dates!).  We were informed that we would be receiving a 30 year old man from the ER; he had sustained a severe head injury and was comatose.
As we were getting him settled in the ICU, we expected to see a neurosurgery resident at any moment. A short time later, Dr. Derward Lepley and Dr. Dudley Johnson walked through the door and went to the patient’s bedside. Madelyn and my eyes got as big as saucers as we looked at each, suddenly realizing that something big was happening. These men were the main and most well renowned heart surgeons in Southeastern Wisconsin at the time and we wondered why they were here.
We found out that there was a woman in her late forties  who had a rapidly failing heart at St’ Luke’s Hospital.  Things moved quickly, labs were drawn, many more people appeared in our ICU and before we knew it, the night was over. Our heads were spinning and the other patients in our care survived ! !
It turned out that the young man for whom we cared that night became the donor for the very first heart transplant done in Southeastern Wisconsin. Betty Anick received her new heart on October 21,1968 and at the time of her death in 1977, she was the longest surviving heart transplant recipient , having lived for 8 years, 5 months.
