September 19, 2023 Fall Luncheon
8/10/2023
MELODI MATHER DUWELL: So sorry I can't take part in the luncheon. We had mid-June high school & family reunions in WI, so we were unable to travel again. My husband continues his challenges with Parkinson's & low vision & I am the 'everyday' & 'flight ' nurse! He remains NPO & doing well with his GI tube for feedings.
Fortunately, my health is good, so this has worked out so far. Like everyone else in the world our age, trying to downsize 'stuff'. Please say hello to all who gather, wherever.
Hugs, Melodi
Pat Mathias Pearson: Would love to meet for lunch but not up for the 3+ hour drive from Door County. I'm still working a few days a week at Peninsula Park golf course. The course is 100 years old this year so some celebrating going on.
Wishing all who may attend the lunch a happy time and good health in the coming years. Pat Mathias Pearson
Kathy Koller Brasch: Hi, FYI. I have ALS, the bulbar variety. Can't talk anymore. Can't eat. Have a feeding tube. Have trouble swallowing. I have everything below my neck. So, I still get to do my "chores". We are in Denton Texas. 30 minutes from one of the boys. The other 2 are in Iowa and Oswego. It's the pits for sure but it could be worse. Hope all is well. Blessings, Kathy Koller Brasch
I picked out the most "newsy" emails. All responders sending greetings from their respective homes.

JEAN BOHANON CHRISTENSEN (1944-2021)
6/29/2021
Melodi Mather Duwell shared the news of the passing of Jean Bohanon Christensen, class of 1965. Melodi & Jean were friends for 58 years & as you can see Jean had a very distinquished nursing career.
Jean was born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin on September 18, 1944 and passed away with her family at her side on April 21, 2021.
She graduated from the Milwaukee County General Hospital School of Nursing on August 20, 1965. While working on her nursing degree and attending a YMCA dance, she was swept offf her feet by Peter, her future husband of 55 years. They married on August 28, 1965 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and moved to their new home on St. Croix. USVI. Jean began her nursing career as an emergency room and operating room nurse at the local hospital on St. Croix. She went on to work at the St. Croix Health Department, the Catholic Social Center, and as a school nurse for an elementary school. While on St. Croix, she became a mom with the birth of her daughter, Carmen in 1967.
In 1973, Jean and her family moved to Ft. Collins, Colorado while Peter earned his Ph.D. Jean worked as a nurse at a local retirement home and after Peter completed his education, Jean and her family moved to Puyallup, Washingtonwhere Jean once again worked as a nurse at a local retirement home. In 1976, Jean and her family, moved to Orlando where they reunited with fellow Cruzan friends, the Lacombs and later the Larges and their families.
While in Orlando, jean worked as a nurse at the Orange County health Department where she had the opportunity to do home-visits for her patients. In her continuous pursuit of expanding her medical knowledge, Jean earned her Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner degree from Emory University in 1983. She then went on to earn her B.S. in Nursing, cum laude, in 1994 from the University of Central Florida while also taking courses at the University of Florida. Jean transitioned from nursing at the health department to working in private practice, providing ob/gyn nurse practitioner care for her numerous patients. While she retired from private practice several years ago, her passion for nursing continued along with her strong desire to provide compassionate care to those in need and she began volunteering as a nurse practitioner at Grace Medical Home. She was volunteering at Grace Medical up until her hospitalization.
In her nursing yearbook, Jean highlighted the following, which exemplifies her devotion:
Nursing is one of the vital professions cooperating with the other health disciplines. It is both an art and a science which directs its efforts towards the patient as a person, meeting his total needs and assisting him and his family to participate in his care and restore him to useful activity in the family unit and his community.
Jean is survived by her husband Peter Christensen, daughter Carmen Ward, son-in-law Rob Ward, grandchildren, Doug Ward, Jack Ward, and Maria Ward, twin brother Jim Bohanon, uncle Harlan Ross, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mike and Norma Christensen, and brothers-in-law, Olie Christensen and Frank Christensen.
The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Jean's honor to Grace Medical Home via the link provided. Grace Medical Home provides coordinated, comprehensive primary medical care. Their approach to care is to take the patient's entire well-being into consideration. Their mission is to be a medical home reflecting the heart of Christ by offering the highest level of health care to those in our community who need it most.
A Celebration of Life gathering was held at Newcomer Funeral Home, 895 S. Goldenrod Road, Orlando on May 8, 2021. Friends and family were invited to share their memories of Jean and wear their favorite Caribbean/Cruzan attire. jean will be interred on St. Croix at a later date.
Contributions may be made in memory of Jean via the following link-www.gracemedicalhome.org

Nine members of the class of '66 attended this year's MCGHSON/MSOE Summer in the City Alumni luncheon. We had a great time visiting w/each other & friends from other classes, hearing about the MSOE Campus news plus having a delicious buffet lunch. Although Bastille Days was happening & downtown is experiencing some significant construction, the ride there was relatively easy & parking in MSOE's parking ramp was no problem as a shuttle was provided as needed. So, mark your calendar for next year & let's see if we can increase our number. It always happens on the Friday of Bastille Days. I will add pictures as I receive.

He worked tirelessly and served countless patients with both skill and compassion including hundreds of hard working members of the Teamsters. Outside of work Sam loved golfing and spending time on Pewaukee Lake sailing "Samurai" or cruising the lake in his speed boat "Miss Wisc". In winter he never missed the chance to ski fresh powder in the mountains of Utah.

This is by Jane Wedel Taufner after learning of the death of Dudley Johnson, MD, a Milwaukee pioneering heart surgeon. Attached is link to newspaper story. Copy & paste link to your browser. http://on.jsonl.in/2eAv4W4
Nursing Story - Jane Taufner
One of my earliest jobs as a nurse was working in the Adult Intensive Care Unit (such as it was in 1968, at one end of the recovery room) at Milwaukee County General Hospital . It was a Saturday night, October 19
th, 1968 and I was working the night shift with my nurse friend, Madelyn ( we were young and single and would much rather have been out on dates!). We were informed that we would be receiving a 30 year old man from the ER; he had sustained a severe head injury and was comatose.
As we were getting him settled in the ICU, we expected to see a neurosurgery resident at any moment. A short time later, Dr. Derward Lepley and Dr. Dudley Johnson walked through the door and went to the patient’s bedside. Madelyn and my eyes got as big as saucers as we looked at each, suddenly realizing that something big was happening. These men were the main and most well renowned heart surgeons in Southeastern Wisconsin at the time and we wondered why they were here.
We found out that there was a woman in her late forties who had a rapidly failing heart at St’ Luke’s Hospital. Things moved quickly, labs were drawn, many more people appeared in our ICU and before we knew it, the night was over. Our heads were spinning and the other patients in our care survived ! !
It turned out that the young man for whom we cared that night became the donor for the very first heart transplant done in Southeastern Wisconsin. Betty Anick received her new heart on October 21,1968 and at the time of her death in 1977, she was the longest surviving heart transplant recipient , having lived for 8 years, 5 months.
